Ever hear of Engelhardt?? How about KAY?

Engelhardt-Link bought Kay's double bass and cello production facilities in the late 60's when Kay closed up, and has continued manufacturing the same line of basses and cellos since 1970, under the "Engelhardt" name. The recession in 2007-2008 hit them a bit hard, and they were forced to scale back their operation - but they're still a family business, under Tom Link, making the same instruments the same way they always have. The company is now called "Link Bass and Cello" but the instruments are still labeled as Engelhardt basses.

Recently, Link Bass has decided to begin direct sales of their instruments. They are now selling the basses directly to customers on their website, for considerably lower prices than I can, and that's why we no longer offer them for sale here.

Because of our long history with Engelhardt-Link, we're keeping this referral page active as a courtesy for those who specifically want an Engelhardt bass, but are no longer taking orders for their basses.

If you are in the market for a quality laminate bass, but not necessarily specifically an Engelhardt, our Estle Louis series of basses offer outstanding quality and a terrific value. Click "New Basses" at left for more information.

Link Bass has several Engelhardt models, detailed and pictured below for your convenience.
EC1 Engelhardt model EC-1 Concert Model Bass
The Concert bass features the "Gamba" style shape (not the pointed violin-style corners). Like all Engelhardt models, it has a laminated Spruce top, with maple back and sides. It has a maple neck, and the fingerboard and tailpiece are made of jatoba. Overall length, 72 inches; scale or string length, 42 inches.

EM-1 Maestro Bass
A popular school model that has won wide acceptance by students and advanced players. Properly sized and aligned, it has a close grained spruce top, curly maple back, laminated of course, as are all Engelhardt basses. Beautiful brown shaded finish. (Also now available as the "EM-1B," which features a blonde finish similar to the Swingmaster!) This bass has the viol corners, like the ES series, with a jatoba fingerboard and tailpiece. This is a durable, yet responsive instrument, and is a great bargain for the bucks. Overall length, 72 inches; scale or string length, 42 inches.

EM3 Engelhardt model EM3 Maestro Junior Bass
The perfect bass for the smaller intermediate student. It has a close grained spruce top and maple back. Violin shaped, with a shaded brown finish. Hard maple fingerboard. The EM-3 is labeled as 1/4 size, but we find that its body runs larger than most other 1/4 size instruments. Overall length, 62 inches; scale or string length, 35 1/4 inches.
EM3 • Maestro Junior (approx. 1/4) size

Engelhardt ES-1 ES-1 Supreme Bass
The ES series (Supreme and Swingmaster) differs from the EM (Maestro) in two primary ways. First, it uses ebony for the fingerboard and tailpiece, and the body is made of "more select woods." Be aware, however, that these better quality woods are chosen for their appearance, since the ES1 and ES9 have a more transparent finish to show off these woods. These instruments receive additional attention and are quite attractive. The ES-1 no longer has a sunburst effect, it is much nicer with the uniform deep reddish-brown finish you see in the photos I took. Ebony trimmed basses now have aircraft cable on the tailpieces and the bridges have been upgraded to a fitted quartered maple bridge.

Also note that the Supreme model is now also available as the "EG-1", which has the same specifications but has the smoothly rounded "Gamba" style corners (as shown at right) rather than the pointed "Violin" style corners of the standard ES-1. Overall length, 72 inches; scale or string length, 42 inches.

ES-9 Swingmaster Bass
The ES9 Swingmaster is a big favorite among many players, especially the rockabilly crowd and others, either for its sort of 50's retro look or simply its dramatic, natural blonde finish. Same quality construction as used in the "Supreme" model. Engelhardt says, "Startling to look at. Talked about wherever seen." It is cool.
