I will always suggest that you start your upright bass adventures by studying with an experienced and schooled teacher. However, I recognize that both geography and cost can get in the way of that method, as quality teachers are not so easy to find in every nook and cranny of the world.

If you're jumping into the world of bluegrass and learning the ropes on double bass, I can recommend this two-DVD set to help get you rolling. Below is some information about what you get in this package.

On DVD One, Mark teaches basic patterns and scales, as well as correct fingerings. You'll learn how to apply concepts like passing notes, chord progressions, arpeggios and chromatic scales to your playing; he applies these (and other important subjects) to several classic bluegrass songs. The first DVD is 75 minutes long, and primarily focuses on "Beginner-Level" instruction.

DVD Two gets deeper, exploring rhythmic and tonal variety and more advanced bass technique. You'll delve into new subjects, including waltz time, walking, and syncopations. New techniques include hammer-ons and pull-offs for bluegrass, and slap bass. In this 60 minute "Intermediate-Level" DVD, you'll also spread into the related rockabilly and novelty styles.
