½ Size String Choices
A Special "Buyer's Guide" from Bob and Mark
So, you've got a 1/2 size bass, and you need some new strings? Rather than make you dig through all the different strings we offer looking to see if a 1/2 size set is available, here they all are in one convenient place.
You can read the short descriptions here, and purchase the set of your choice directly from this page. You can also learn more about a specific set you're interested in by clicking its link in the "related items" section, below.
The Choices:
D'Addario Helicore Hybrid:
The Hybrids are a purposeful compromise between Orchestral and Pizzicato strings. They have slightly more growl and sustain than -- and are not quite as "bowable" as -- the Orchestra set. But they are still quite a nice compromise if you want a bit more "grit" than the Orchestral strings provide; and yet you still use the bow often enough to need a more "arco-friendly" string than the Pizzicato version of the Helicore strings.
D'Addario Helicore Orchestra: The Orchestra strings from D'Addario's Helicore line are designed to be very bowable, as well as to have lessened sustain, since orchestral players are not looking for the same level of sustain that a jazz pizzicato performer would want. This makes this string set an excellent choice for students in school orchestras. They also work out well for the bluegrass bassist, as they've got great thump power and their level of definition suits the style rather well. And they're quite affordable!
Corelli 350A: We like these strings (and use the 370 ¾ sized versions ourselves) for their versatility and articulate sound. These are not your Daddy's doghouse bass string... unlike the more typical and earlier string types, these have an edge to their attack, rather than the traditional blunter attack. Physically, they are thinner in gauge when compared to other strings, and I also find them to be more flexible and less stiff. They are versatile and articulate, with a distinct edge to their attack. They lean towards a more modern sound, and while a little bright at first, they settle in after a few hours of play. Side benefit: they bow well!
Thomastik Spirocore: Spiros are a longtime favorite for jazz and other genres, and they have been a popular string (regardless of style) for many years. They have great sustain and a great big sound; good for many styles, but they remain a jazz favorite. You'll also find them on lots of general use basses, for bluegrass, blues, and other styles where that big sound and sustain are prized. We carry the standard ½ size "Medium" Spirocores, as well as the Weich, or light weight gauge, which are more flexible and lighter.
Pirastro Obligato: These strings have a solid synthetic core with a very thin metal wrap. They were designed to emulate gut strings, so their attack is "old school" with a more
blunt and thicker, warmer hit, with a little less sustain than more
modern jazz strings. Their very smooth surface is kind to the fingers
and they are a dream to bow. If you want your sound to be
"traditional" for bluegrass, or
other styles that call for that sound, you will enjoy the Obligatos.
