The Meisel COM-90 Clip-On LCD Chromatic Tuner is the replacement to the popular MST-10 and MCT-7L tuners that we carried for a while. Along with a built-in mic, this handy clip-on tuner senses vibration, so you can tune up in noisy rooms... and even check intonation as you play!
As you can see from the photo at rright, this is now my "go-to" tuner. Why? The first characteristic that caused me to switch from the MST-10 is the multi-color display. The brightness and color of the information is super-easy to read, and the way it changes color when you're on target was the clincher for me (I can tune without my glasses!) Secondly, it also has a built-in microphone, so you can switch between tuning "open-air" with the mic, for instruments that don't have sufficient or easily accessible vibrating parts.
The photo at right shows Bob at a Gospel Bluegrass affair in September 2010, where he amplified his pre-war Juzek bass using a Fishman Full Circle pickup and used a LR Baggs GigPro preamp. You can see the photo inset showing the Meisel COM-90 tuner.
But one of the coolest features yet is the great goosneck which connects the clip to the main tuner body. You can twist, bend, and aim the tuner so you can both find the best tuning contact position AND actually be able to see the display! This new tuner also features a silica gel padded clip for the ultimate "soft touch" on your valuable instrument. It's also adjustable for flat and double-flat tuning, and you can change the base pitch from A=410 through A=450. This new tuner also has presets for Bass, Guitar, Violin and Ukelele, as well as a fully chromatic mode.
My impression of the build quality of this tuner also exceeds that of the MST-10; while the MST-10 is a very good, functional tuner, this well-made tuner feels and looks far more "money." And it's the same price!
The COM90 tuner has a small transducer built into the spring-loaded clamp, sensing the actual vibration of your instrument. Note: This is different than most other clip-on tuners - if you look closely, most have the vibration sensor in the BODY of the tuner, so it's not in direct contact with your instrument. If you've ever tried to tune your bass while the rest of the orchestra or band is tuning up, you know how frustrating it can be if you're relying on a tuner which only has a mic. The super-bright display shows the target note and the calibration setting. When the note is perfectly in tune, the display changes from bright blue to bright green, making it easy to visually confirm your intonation at a glance.
This little tuner, at 2.25" x 1.5" x .45" inches (tuner body only) and a ridiculously light 1.5 ounces (including clamp and battery), it’s light enough to mount on your bridge.
The COM-90 is our successor to the very popular MST-10 and MCT-7L Tuners, which we carried for some time. The big differences?
The COM-90 features a bendable gooseneck, allowing for easier repositioning and viewing of the display
The COM-90 changes color when you're in tune, making it easy to tell at a glance
The COM-90 includes both a vibration sensor in the clip AND a built-in microphone for tuning
The COM-90's vibration sensor is actually IN THE CLIP rather than in the tuner body, which - in our experience - improves note detection and accuracy
The COM-90 features tuning modes for several instruments, as well as chromatic mode
The COM-90's clip has a silica gel pad, which is softer on your instrument's finish than the rubber on the MCT-8L
My experience with the COM-90 is shown in the video below; the tuner is on my carved Juzek, and you can see it likes it very much. This does not mean it will immediately nail the E, or any other string, as quickly on your bass! Basses, bridges, and position differs. I have two bass guitars built by the same luthier - the COM-90 is amazing on one (on the headstock), but a little less reactive on the other. Low E and low B are tough on most any tuners, even those that plug into a pickup, because the lowest notes have the fewest cycles (vibrations) per second. Just a word to the wise...

Here is what some of our customers think about this product:
Hi Mark,
Just wanted to say thanks for getting the cable to me. The timing was perfect: It arrived yesterday, just in time to "go to work" in the first string class session.
It seems that I'm the only bass guy to sign up for this class. As if that didn't make me stick out enough, the NS bass *really* drew lots of attention. The conductor, violin instructor, and one of the cellists were keenly interested in looking it over. The NS sounded fantastic (of course), and really filled up the room with its sound.
The Meisel tuner drew the eye of that same cellist, who'd been fumbling with an iphone app to tune up. (Yes, really.) I demonstrated the tuner, mentioned your shop by name, and suggested he seek you out to get one for himself.
Last but not least, I also rocked the official Gollihur Bass Mug! I only wish it came in a larger size. A 90-minute class is long, and I was thirsty! (Or, maybe I should get a couple more...) ;D
All in all, it was a great time, and thanks to your shop, I walked in completely geared up, and ready to go. This should be a fun season!
