The mic the pros choose...

AMT VS Violin/Viola microphone shownAMT (Applied Microphone Technology, Inc.) has earned a lot of respect in the audio and music industries with their array of instrument microphones. You'll find a long list of top players that don't just endorse them, but actually use them. After experiencing and enjoying the double bass microphones, I was drawn to the rest of the string family mics, and am proud to offer them as well.

When you look at what AMT offers and has accomplished, it's clear that their mics are influenced by real world use. There are several variations of the AMT mic for violin, viola, and mandolin players. In each case, the condenser microphone is suspended in an isolation ring to eliminate sympathetic vibrations and handling noise. The microphone itself is specifically designed for the smaller instruments in the string family, offering pure tonal reproduction while being as unobtrusive as possible. The reproduction of natural sound of the instrument is the goal.

This photo shows the VS microphone mounted on a violin. Options exist to make it wireless, as well.

The same microphone is used with each system, the additional components supplied differ, each designed to interface with the specific performance or studio situation you encounter.

General Specifications that apply to each system:
  • Element: Condenser
  • Polar Pattern: Cardoid
  • Frequency Response: 25Hz - 20kHz
  • Sensitivity: -65dB±± 4dB
  • Impedance: 150 Ohms (with preamp) or n/a
  • Max Input SPL: 140 db
  • Dimension 3" Flex Arm

VS BP40 belt packThe AMT VS offers the player local control of volume during performance through the use of a belt-pack preamp. The mic is a ultra miniature, feather weight low profile condenser microphone specially designed for the Violin, Viola, and Mandolin. The microphone attaches to the Violin, Viola, and Mandolin with a clamp designed for be solid on the instrument without harming or dampening the natural sound or vibrations.
  • Microphone Weight: only 20 grams
  • Belt Pack Weight: less than four ounces
  • Mic-Belt Pack Cable Length: six feet
  • Belt Pack Features:
    - volume control
    - mini input jack to mate with microphone
    - ¼ TRS output jack; ¼-XLR cable is included
    - powered by 9 volt battery and/or phantom powered through ¼-XLR cable
The "standard" VS system comes with the AMT VS Microphone, Wired Belt Pack Preamp, ¼" XLR Cable, and Hard shell Blo-mold protective case. This belt pack allows the player to control their levels using the volume control. The VS can also be upgraded to a wireless unit later through the use of the optional AMT Wi5C, which is also available as a package, below.

VSW/Wi5C Wireless Setup This Wireless Microphone System allows the player to have the most natural sounding violin, viola, and mandolin microphone (AMT VS) with the freedom of a wireless system which uses no beltpack. The wireless transmitter clips directly onto the mic clamp, eliminating the need to run a cable down your body to your belt - see photo to the right, of the transmitter mounted on another AMT mic model. The receiver is pictured to the left. An AMT soft carrying pouch for the microphone system is also included.

VS Wireless+Wired Setup This package simply combines the standard VS model wired mic and the Wi5C Wireless component to offer the best of both worlds - giving you the option to choose to operate wired or wireless, depending on what the gig situation dictates. Includes the VS mic, the Belt Pack Preamp, XLR Cable, Blo-Mold case, and Wi5C Wireless Transmitter and Receiver.

AP40 Floor PreampVS Studio combines the most natural sounding violin, viola, and mandolin microphone system on the market with the AMT AP40 floor pre-amp. The AP40 converts the microphones to low impedance and regulates the voltage to the microphone, and creates a specific frequency curve for these instrument applications. The curve is necessary is on certain models or instruments in order to maintain the most natural reproduction of sound in conjunction with the achieving the most amount of gain before feedback in a live application. The output of the preamp is an XLR Low Impedance balanced output sending a signal at normal microphone levels, and the unit includes a ground lift switch to avoid hum, if needed. A single 9 volt battery powers the unit, but it can also be powered by standard phantom power using the mixer connection.
