The mic the pros choose...
AMT (Applied Microphone Technology, Inc.) has earned a lot of respect in the audio and music industries with their array of instrument microphones. You'll find a long list of top players that don't just endorse them, but actually use them. After experiencing and enjoying the double bass microphones, I was drawn to the rest of the string family mics, and am proud to offer them as well.
When you look at what AMT offers and has accomplished, it's clear that their mics are influenced by real world use. There are several variations of the AMT mic for violin, viola, and mandolin players. In each case, the condenser microphone is suspended in an isolation ring to eliminate sympathetic vibrations and handling noise. The microphone itself is specifically designed for the smaller instruments in the string family, offering pure tonal reproduction while being as unobtrusive as possible. The reproduction of natural sound of the instrument is the goal.
This photo shows the VS microphone mounted on a violin. Options exist to make it wireless, as well.

VS Studio combines the most natural sounding violin, viola, and mandolin microphone system on the market with the AMT AP40 floor pre-amp. The AP40 converts the microphones to low impedance and regulates the voltage to the microphone, and creates a specific frequency curve for these instrument applications. The curve is necessary is on certain models or instruments in order to maintain the most natural reproduction of sound in conjunction with the achieving the most amount of gain before feedback in a live application. The output of the preamp is an XLR Low Impedance balanced output sending a signal at normal microphone levels, and the unit includes a ground lift switch to avoid hum, if needed. A single 9 volt battery powers the unit, but it can also be powered by standard phantom power using the mixer connection.
