The mic the pros choose...

AMT VS Violin/Viola microphone shownAMT (Applied Microphone Technology, Inc.) has earned a lot of respect in the audio and music industries with their array of instrument microphones. You'll find a long list of top players that don't just endorse them, but actually use them. After experiencing and enjoying the double bass microphones, I was drawn to the rest of the string family mics, and am proud to offer them as well.

When you look at what AMT offers and has accomplished, it's clear that their mics are influenced by real world use. There are four variations of the AMT mic for violin, viola, and mandolin players. In each case, the condenser microphone is suspended in an isolation ring to eliminate sympathetic vibrations and handling noise. The microphone itself is specifically designed for the smaller instruments in the string family, offering pure tonal reproduction while being as unobtrusive as possible. The reproduction of natural sound of the instrument is the goal. The microphone is offered in four different system configurations, each to meet specific player or sound engineering requirements.

This photo shows the VS, VSW - Shure, and VS Studio microphone; the Roam 2 adds a transmitter, shown in a photo within its own section, below.

VS
The AMT VS offers the player local control of volume during performance through the use of a belt-pack preamp.
VSW - Shure
VSW - Senn

The AMT VSW - Shure & Sennheiser are for players who always want to connect their directly to a standard Shure 4 pin or Sennheiser 3.5mm wireless belt pack; the microphone is supplied with the manufacturer's special plug.
VS Studio
The AMT VS Studio is intended for studio applications or for use with a sound engineer. The basic AP40 interface box provides a standard XLR output for direct connection to a mixing board, where the microphone's operations are remotely controlled.
Roam 2
The AMT Roam 2 is a complete belt pack-free wireless system for Violin. The lightweight Samson Airline wireless components, including the receiver, are included.

The same microphone is used with each system, the additional components supplied differ, each designed to interface with the specific performance or studio situation you encounter.

General Specifications that apply to each system:
  • Element: Condenser
  • Polar Pattern: Cardoid
  • Frequency Response: 25Hz - 20kHz
  • Sensitivity: -65dB±± 4dB
  • Impedance: 150 Ohms (with preamp) or n/a
  • Max Input SPL: 140 db
  • Dimension 3" Flex Arm

VS BP40 belt packThe VS is a ultra miniature, feather weight low profile condenser microphone specially designed for the Violin, Viola, and Mandolin. The microphone attaches to the Violin, Viola, and Mandolin with a clamp designed for be solid on the instrument without harming or dampening the natural sound or vibrations.
  • Microphone Weight: only 20 grams
  • Belt Pack Weight: less than four ounces
  • Mic-Belt Pack Cable Length: six feet
  • Belt Pack Features:
    - volume control
    - mini input jack to mate with microphone
    - ¼ TRS output jack; ¼-XLR cable is included
    - powered by 9 volt battery and/or phantom powered through ¼-XLR cable
The system comes with the AMT VS Microphone, Belt pack Preamp, ¼ - XLR Cable, and Hard shell Blo-mold protective case. The VS can also be used with most major brand wireless belt pack transmitters and receivers through the use of an optional AMT Interface, available directly from AMT once the system is purchased here.
This belt pack allows the player to control their levels using the volume control on top of the belt pack.

VSW - Shure Wireless Compatible Microphone System allows the player to directly connect the most natural sounding violin, viola, and mandolin microphone (AMT VS) with any Shure belt pack transmitter / wireless system. The VS comes wired directly with a 4 pin connector to connect directly to any Shure wireless belt pack. Most of the specifications of the VS mio, above, apply to the VSW Shure, but the AMT VSW - Shure includes the AMT VSW Microphone terminated with six foot, 4 pin connector cable designed to plug directly into standard Shure Transmitters, An AMT soft carrying pouch for the microphone system is also included. The Shure ULXS14 and the ULXP14 are recommended for use with this AMT microphone.

VSW - Sennheiser same as above, but with a 3.5mm connector for direct use with Sennheiser Belt Packs.

AP40 Floor PreampVS Studio combines the most natural sounding violin, viola, and mandolin microphone system on the market with the AMT AP40 floor pre-amp. The AP40 converts the microphones to low impedance and regulates the voltage to the microphone, and creates a specific frequency curve for these instrument applications. The curve is necessary is on certain models or instruments in order to maintain the most natural reproduction of sound in conjunction with the achieving the most amount of gain before feedback in a live application. The output of the preamp is an XLR Low Impedance balanced output sending a signal at normal microphone levels, and the unit includes a ground lift switch to avoid hum, if needed. A single 9 volt battery powers the unit, but it can also be powered by standard phantom power using the mixer connection.

The Roam 2 photo shows the addition of the light weight Airline wireless unitRoam 2 is a complete microphone / wireless system for Violin, Viola and Mandolin. The mechanism attaches to the sides of the instrument, to avoid affecting the accoustic sound. The microphone itself is suspended in a 2 point isolation ring to reduce handling noise, and it features a flexible gooseneck so the player can position the microphone for the most accurate reproduction. Its rugged construction of anodized aviation aluminum makes it highly durable, while being lightweight and non-corrosive.

The AMT Roam 2 Microphone system includes
  • AMT condenser microphone and special mounting system
  • Samson Airline Transmitter and Concert 77 Diversity Reciever.
  • Power Supply
  • Mini- screw driver for wireless adjustments
