The mic the pros choose...
AMT (Applied Microphone Technology, Inc. has earned a lot of respect in the audio and music industries with their array of instrument microphones. You'll find a long list of top pro bassists such as John Pattitucci, Rufus Reid, Christian McBride, etc., who endorse (and actually use) the AMT system.
The AMT mic system began with a unique mounting system (see photo below) that gently and quickly clamps on the upper bout of your instrument, using a natural material, soft suede, to secure it without marring the finish of your fine instrument. The ten inch gooseneck allows you to position the microphone precisely so you can amplify your sound. The condenser microphone is suspended in a 4-point isolation ring eliminating sympathetic vibrations and handling noise, as shown on my Juzek in the photo on the left. During 2007 they integrated a cable jack into the side mount, replacing the orginal loose cable - see the photo array at the bottom of the page for closeups.
In late 2007 they introduced a tailpiece mounted unit that is otherwise identical and priced the same. In this case the mic connector and gooseneck terminate at a slotted plate that mounts at the string holes of the tailpiece (see photos). A layer of rubber allows it to mold to the back of your tailpiece for a stable platform, and the position allows you to leave it in place when traveling between gigs.

In order to get the most gain before feedback, the AMT bass mic uses a very tight cardiod polar pattern to give a high rejection to surrounding noise, at the same time reproducing accurately the subtleties of the bass.

The AMT microphones use a four-conductor connector that requires the use of their specially designed preamplifier; two are available:
- S25B Standard Preamp has a single 150 ohm XLR (microphone style) output jack, designed for a standard microphone-style input. Use with a bass amplifier instrument input will require a commonly available XLR-¼" transformer/adaptor. There are no controls.
 - SP25B Super Preamp offers two XLR outputs, one with a ground lifted isolation transformer split, and a ¼ line driver output with an onboard level control. You will need to judge if this additional bit of versatility will be useful in your gigging environments.
The 'super pre-amp' has 3 outputs, including two XLR outputs. One is the regular output for standard use, the red one is the isolation transformer. If you are playing with a PA and start to hear a 'hum', move the connection from the standard XLR output to the isolation or red output. to eliminate this. The ¼ inch output is your line driver, normally used with a standard musical instrument amplifier, with the XLR signal to the house PA or recording device. The Pre-amp works with phantom power or a 9-volt battery; a battery is required by the circuitry even when phantom power is used. The external volume control is for the line driver/¼ inch output. The preamp also has an internal volume control in the final gain stage that you can adjust with a screw driver, used only if more or less gain is required to match the gain on your amplifier. |
