Bass Max
Double Bass Pickup

The Bass Max is a compact unit designed to be wedged into the wing in the side of your bridge. K&K advises that they feel that one sandwiched unit is better than a pair, with one in each wing of the bass, to avoid potential out-of-phase problems. It has two piezo elements in this single rubber jacket, sandwiched top and bottom, with material in between, so it senses the activity from both the top and bottom of the bridge.

The Bass Max is my most popular pickup, and rightfully so. It sounds great, with a full range response and is especially good for situations where you'd need to temporarily mount or switch the pickup between basses (a 30 second job). For the many different styles I play, I have come to prefer the Bass Max's versatile character; though the Double Big Twin (also from K&K) is absolutely wonderful for those who specialize in straight-ahead jazz.

Compared to the Double Big Twin, the Bass Max is very clean, with the string sounds not quite as "defined" -- and that's not a bad thing, but a different one -- it is still crystal clear, just not as 'stringy.' This pickup also has the same warmth, and that is generally unusual for piezos. It also has a smoother arco response than the DBT -- more bridge than string sound, since there is more wood between it and where the strings meet the bridge. Electric bassists could draw the comparison of a bridge pickup as opposed one placed at a midpoint (not the neck position). However, unlike some other pickups, it is not muddy or dark, and produces plenty of highs -- you can get some hand, string, and slapping sounds, too, unless you eq them out.

If you lean towards bluegrass or rockabilly, or want a slightly thicker, more mid-rangy sound, I'd go with a Bass Max -- especially if you switch to arco a good deal. The Double Big Twin has a more "scooped", hi-fi style of sound (which I sometimes preferred for jazz on the Juzek), where the Bass Max had more midrange and a little less string.

Will it fit your bridge? Bridges are not uniform, and many require slight alterations to accommodate any pickup. I use a file or piece of sandpaper wrapped around a slim slice of wood to remove just enough wood to make it fit. If the bridge wing is too wide, a small piece of wood can be used as a shim. Instructions are included with the pickups as well as my own tips and hints on installation and use, it's no challenge to fit it.

If you've ever had your hands on Ampeg Baby Bass reissue (and most other Azola made electric upright basses), take note of the Bass Max pickup that is inserted in the side of the bridge -- K&K made it for them.

If your application calls for what this unit has to offer, have more than one bass and don't want to buy a pickup for each one, or you don't want to glue anything to your bridge, I heartily recommend it. Please consider that if your bridge is shorter than the usual style 3/4 size bridge, such as the type that has very long legs and a short top section, the Bass Max may not be the best choice. If there is a very short distance from the top to the bridge wing, there may be insufficient wood for the strings' sound to diffuse, and the sound of the two closest strings may be louder than the other pair.

Here is what some of our customers think about this product:
Bob, Thanks! I'm really happy with the K&K BassMax pickup. It was satisfying even without the PowerPack, but I tried it with a friend's PP and I liked it even more with the increased flexibility of the volume and tone controls. I play bluegrass on my Kay 1955 with Spirocore Mediums and like the punch and growl and solid acoustic bass tone. No more vocal mikes for me. I've already had five inquiries from bass players in the audiences as to what I'm using and where I got it. I think you'll have a few more customers very soon.

Bob, thanks for the quick shipping on the Bass Max and Fishman (Pro-EQ) pre-amp. I received them Fri. and used at a gig Sun. WOW ! What a great combination. I didn't know my old Kay could sound so good. Installation was easy and I must have done it right because the bass sounds great. The pre amp gives you allot of options and I'm still experimenting with it. I found a setting that I liked for the bluegrass gig we did but want to try some others when I get time. Lots of fun! Thanks again

Hi there Mark,

I received the pickup (Bass Max) and wow what a difference. Its totally transformed the sound altogether. I am very pleased and will have no trouble recommending this product to anyone else. Thanks...

Thanks for your quick call back Tuesday regarding the Bass Max, rosin, and Bass Wheel. Your knowledge about the problem I was having with another pickup helped me decide that the Bass Max should work better with my GK MB 150 S combo amp, and fine without an external pre-amp. Thanks for your expanded "editorials" on your site regarding all your products, string changing tips, etc. This is much more helpful than the average "catalog," which typically reproduces only minimal product information from the manufacturer or distributor.

I received my black pro bag case and Bass Max pickup the other day.

All I can say is WOW! That case is so nice...I was about to spend hundreds more for a competitor's case of comparable value. For the price, nothing comes close. What a great case. Lots of padding inside and good reinforcement on the outside in all the right places, several handles and the backpack strap is great. It fits my Juzek perfectly. The wheels are real bonus!

Now, about the Bass Max...I can't believe how great it sounds with my Juzek, running through my Ampeg SVT6 Pro!!! Just awesome. Great pizz sound, with a real natural tone, and just enough string sound, and it sounds fabulous with the bow (using Piastrasso Obligatto's). I am running it directly into the amp...I have a Sadowsky outboard pre-amp, but have not even tried using it with the Bass Max because it sounds so great directly into the Ampeg!! It is literally a quantum step up from my older Fishman BP-100. I can't believed I waited this long to get the Bass Max.

Thank You!

Received the Bass Max last Friday and after a little sanding on the wing of the bridge by my son, the pick up fit perfectly and sounds super. Loved the red sheet with your tips and as always thanks for the personal touch!

Hi Bob, I have spent the last several months giving myself a crash course in URB. Your site was a great help and answered many questions for me. I purchased the K&K Bass Max, and about a week later a set of Pirastro Obligato strings. Both from you. I can't tell you how happy I am with these choices. The strings made a tremendous difference in the sound and volume of my bass. And the Bass Max lets the true sound of the bass through to my combo. It even sounds great with no preamp.

Anyone just getting acquainted with upright bass that wants to do it right the first time should visit your site, and trust the information. You saved me a great deal of time and money.

P.S. Thanks for the ultra fast shipping!
Chris
I have to say, once again your products and service have surpassed all my expectations. My bass master pro pickup system arrived two days after I placed the order, and after a quick installation it performed amazingly well. As you know, I've been using the bass max pickup for about the past two years and have loved it, but this new system is even better...a lot better. Since purchasing the bass max pickup, I've been asked many times by my fellow musicians in town how it is that I'm able to get such a warm rich tone from my bass at stage volumes. Wait until they hear the bass master pro!

I appreciate what you do for all of us low end lovers out here. You're a good man, Bob.

I have my very own Bass-Max in tha house... A very good friend and musical collegue helped me out since I don't have a credit card. This morning I hooked it up, and I was shocked... I had to cut down volume, and a bit of bass...and just cruise... god***nation... excuse my French! Where did this came from... I have never ever, in my 23 years of being a bassist, heard something like this... amazing... "Hey everybody out there...put your ElectroVoice RE 20, AKG C1000S, Fishman, Underwood, Shadow, etc. in a big drawer... and never touch it again... end of search... for the HOLYTONE... it's been taken care of..."

Hi BOB. I am very pleased with the way you do bussiness.... I got my bass max and my pure preamp in the time that you told me to, which was fast considering that I live in southamerican chile. I used the sand paper to sand out and put the bassmax in the typical bridge E string side part. I think it sounds great... It has a clean pizzicato and arco response as its known and its very easy to install... I am very happy with the sound knowing that I have cheap strings. I congratulate you for your bussiness and I send my gratitude with a loud KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK.

Hi, I must write you a note to say what an awesome pickup the KK Bass Max is. The sound is woody and natural and I can plug straight into my Laney amp with no preamp. My laminate bass was fitted with a Fishman BP-100, but the Bass Max has totally transformed the sound of my instrument. Great service from your store too - I purchased the pickup via eBay and it arrived in just over a week (shipped to the UK) and was very easy to fit. Thanks!
